When should my child first see a dentist?
YOUR CHILD'S FIRST VISIT
The first check-up, around your child's first birthday
The best time for a first dental visit is around your child's first birthday, or when their first tooth comes through, whichever happens first. It sounds early, and it usually surprises parents, but starting young keeps baby teeth healthy and helps your little one get used to the sounds, sights and friendly faces at the dentist.
This first appointment is mostly about comfort. We'll take a gentle look, count any teeth that have appeared, and show you how to clean them at home. It's also your chance to ask the questions every new parent has, from teething and dummies to thumb sucking and what a healthy first tooth should look like.
Building the habit through the toddler years
Between one and three, the rest of the baby teeth push through, so regular check-ups help us catch any small problems early. Visits stay short and friendly. We'll count teeth, check they're coming in nicely, and give them a gentle clean if your toddler is happy to sit still.
Wriggling is completely normal at this age and we're well used to it. The goal is to make the dental chair feel like a familiar place rather than a scary one. We can also talk through diet, drink bottles and the easiest way to brush small teeth without turning it into a nightly battle.
Proper check-ups and cleans for preschoolers
By preschool age, most children can sit for a full check-up and clean. This is a good time to build brushing into the daily routine and to keep an eye on how the baby teeth are sitting, since they hold the space that adult teeth will need later.
We'll check for early signs of decay, especially between the teeth where it's easy to miss, and share simple ways to make brushing feel like fun rather than a chore. If your child feels nervous, that's fine. We'll take it at their pace and let them explore the chair before anything else happens.
Caring for a mix of baby and adult teeth
From about six, the adult teeth start to arrive and the mix of baby and adult teeth needs a closer eye. Regular check-ups let us spot crowding, decay or bite issues while they're still easy to manage, and keep your child's smile on track through a big stage of growth.
For active kids, this is also the age to think about a custom mouthguard for sport, and in some cases fissure sealants to protect the deep grooves in new back teeth. We'll keep showing your child how to look after their own teeth, so good habits stick well into their teenage years.
MAKING CHILDREN'S DENTAL CARE AFFORDABLE — CDBS
Children Dental Benefit Scheme (CBDS)
What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian Government program that helps cover the cost of basic dental care for eligible children. It pays for everyday treatments like check-ups, cleans, X-rays and fillings, so families can keep their kids' teeth healthy without a big bill.
We treat eligible children under the CDBS at our north Brisbane practice, so cost is one less thing to worry about. If you're not sure whether your child qualifies, the quick check in the next tab will point you in the right direction.
Is my child eligible?
Most children whose families receive certain government payments qualify. Tick the boxes that apply to see whether your child is likely eligible for the CDBS.
What the CDBS covers
The schedule covers a wide range of general dental treatments that keep children's teeth healthy, including:
- Check-ups and examinations
- X-rays
- Cleans and scale
- Fissure sealants
- Fillings
- Root canals
- Tooth extractions
- Fluoride treatments
A few things sit outside the schedule. It does not cover orthodontics (braces), cosmetic dental work, or any treatment carried out in hospital. If your child needs something beyond the CDBS, we'll explain the options and costs clearly before anything goes ahead.
Check your eligibility before you book
The quick check in the previous tab is a helpful guide, but eligibility is decided by the government rather than by us. Before you book, it's worth confirming your child is covered so there are no surprises at the appointment.
The easiest way is through your Medicare online account via myGov, where you can see whether your child is eligible and how much of the benefit is left. You can also call Medicare on 132 011, or read the full details on the Services Australia website.

Gentle, Anxiety-Free Dental Care for Children
A positive dental experience can make a lasting difference to a child’s confidence and oral health. We provide calm, supportive children’s dental care designed to help young patients feel safe, relaxed, and comfortable during appointments, whether they are visiting for a routine check-up or treatment for a dental concern.
Preventive Dental Care for Growing Smiles
Preventive dentistry plays an important role in protecting children’s teeth as they grow and develop. Regular dental check-ups, professional cleans, fluoride treatments, and fissure sealants can help reduce the risk of decay while supporting strong, healthy smiles through every stage of childhood.
Children’s Check-Ups, Cleans and Early Treatment
Early dental care helps identify concerns before they become more complex. Children may benefit from routine examinations, cleans, fillings, and other timely treatments that support healthy teeth, monitor development, and address common issues such as cavities, plaque build-up, or enamel wear.
Supportive Dental Care for Kids of All Ages
Every child has different dental needs depending on their age, stage of development, and comfort level. From toddlers attending their first dental visit to older children needing ongoing care, treatment is tailored to encourage healthy habits, manage dental problems early, and maintain long-term oral health.
How do you ensure children are comfortable at the dentist?
Your Child's Comfort
We focus on creating a calm, friendly environment where children feel safe, supported, and at ease throughout their visit. By taking a gentle approach, explaining each step in a simple way, and moving at a pace that suits the child, we help reduce anxiety and build trust from the moment they arrive. Our team understands that every child is different, so we tailor the experience to their age, comfort level, and individual needs to make dental care as positive and stress-free as possible.

FAQ's
At what age should my child first see a dentist?
Around their first birthday, or when their first tooth comes through. Early visits are about comfort and prevention, not treatment.
How often should my child have a dental check-up?
For most children, every six months. Regular visits let us catch small issues early and keep your child at ease in the chair.
Will my child need dental X-rays?
Only if we need them. When they are needed, we use low-dose digital X-rays and only take them when they’ll genuinely help your child’s care
Can my child be seen under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?
Yes — we treat eligible children under the CDBS. Eligibility depends on your family’s circumstances; you can check on the Services Australia website or ask our team and we’ll help.
How can I help an anxious child feel comfortable?
Keep it positive at home, avoid words like “hurt” or “needle”, and let us do the rest. Our team goes at your child’s pace and explains everything in kid-friendly language.
What should I do if my child breaks or knocks out a tooth?
Call us as soon as possible — dental injuries are best treated quickly. See our emergency dentistry page for what to do in the meantime.
